My name is Mandisa Cambu. I am 9-years-old. I live with my grandmother and mother in the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.
Since 1948, South Africa has been under apartheid laws by its all-white government. Apartheid policies state that non-white South Africans must live in separate areas and use public facilities that are separate from those used by white South Africans. These laws prevented and limited contact between non-whites and blacks. Although the black majority suffered greatly from these laws, it made some whites who benefitted from the structure not really feel free or be at peace with their consciences.
Many black South Africans fought and died or were imprisoned for the freedom of our people. Although Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for most of his life, he was not bitter toward the people who sent him to prison. Instead, he worked toward the reconciliation of non-whites and whites. Mr. Mandela’s goal was to bridge the racial divide in South Africa and, thus, bring peace to the nations.
