Recently, I was flustered over a project I was working on. It was like pulling teeth to get things going. Nothing I did seemed or felt right. I would sit in front of the computer and stare at the screen and in the words of Curly, one of the three stooges, “I’m thinking, but nothing’s happening.” That was me. I took walks to clear my mind. Nothing. I relaxed, I exercised, I googled–Nothing.
Then I had to make a trip. Although I had my computer in the car with me, I didn’t feel like turning it on, so I grabbed some paper and pen and tried to do things the good old fashioned way. Once I spread that paper out and started doodling, every aspect of my project started to come into focus. Soon everything fell into place, from start to finish, in a matter of minutes.
I thought back to my school days before computers were attached to our hips, backs, sides and shoulders. I could flip open a book and plot and plan anything in no time. I would be in meetings at work and come out with a problem to a situation because I had doodled it out on paper.
I’m not saying that the computer gave me a mind block. Sometimes it’s great to just pull away from the project at hand, use some old methods to get the creative juices flowing. After all, what would we do if all of a sudden, the worlds technology and digital systems suddenly grind to a halt? I don’t even want to think of the disaster that would cause. Yikes! Well till then,
