AS IRON SHARPENS IRON, SO ONE PERSON SHARPENS ANOTHER. PROVERBS 27:17

I had so much going on with work and family events at the start of the holidays that I did not get to wrap Christmas gifts until the Christmas Eve morning. I was very pleased at how fast and smooth it all went as I had not gotten up any earlier than usual to have my morning prayer and then wrap gifts. My daughter, Crystal, helped me set the gifts under the Christmas tree, and we opened all of them that evening, or so I thought.

On Christmas Day, my husband discovered some unwrapped gifts I had missed.  I guess even with the help of a ladder, I had not reached deep enough into the top shelf of the closet where we had hid the gifts. Not only that, on Boxing Day, Crystal wanted to do Family Game Night and as my hubby searched through the game section of the cupboard, we found another gift from the previous Christmas that was still unopened. Needless to say, Crystal had a blast because she got to open gifts three days in a row.

That got me thinking about hidden talents–what gifts and talents lurk within us waiting to be discovered and shared with family and friends and even the world. Most people who know me always associate me with writing. About three years ago, I connected with Anette of Photos by Anette, even though we both grew up in Sierra Leone, I knew she would not know me because I went to school with her older brother, yet the minute she mentioned my name, his first words were, “she was always writing in school, is she still writing?” If I wasn’t writing, I was involved in some play or other or singing group. Writing and acting were my strengths and talents, my hobbies, what people knew I enjoyed doing.

What I did not know until some many years ago when my son was born was that I possessed abilities to draw, and I’m not just talking about stick figures. Well up until then, I thought that stick figures were the best I could do. I had just given birth to my son that morning and as I lay down for the night and all was calm, I remembered that the following day was my husband’s birthday and I did not have a card for him. The hospital gift shop was closed and although I knew he would understand my situation, I still wanted to give my husband a card. It was then I spotted a pamphlet on my table with a mother and baby. I asked the nurse for a pencil with an eraser and a cardboard and went to work, not tracing, but  actually recopying the artwork. I did such a great copy that the nurses were surprised, I was shocked and my husband was blown away.

Drawing was a talent I never knew was there. It had been hidden, never explored, but it was there all the time–well the ability to draw was there waiting to be discovered. One of the things I hope to accomplish this year is to nurture that talent/ability to draw whether it is making cards, illustrating books or drawings for my blogs/websites or whatever, I feel it is a blessing and my prayer is that it will be used to bless others.

That said, have you discovered any hidden talents that need to be nurtured? Do you think you have a talent for business, helping others, arts & entertainment? Did you do something recently that was out of your comfort zone but discovered you really enjoyed it? Whether you did or not, here are a few tips for discovering and nurturing hidden talents:

1. Search your heart and thoughts to pinpoint that thing that is usually foremost in your thoughts that you would like to do someday.

2. Research how or what needs to be done to develop your talent(s)

3. Act on it – do what you need to do to get things going

5. Showcase your talent(s) and be a blessing to family and friends and the world

Perhaps you do know what your talent is but are embarrassed because it does not measure up to others that are in the same industry. Take heart and be encouraged, remember that all talents have to be developed. Everything with practice, has a potential for perfection.

Here’s to wishing you a prosperous 2016 filled with great and exciting things.
As Always,
Be blessed,
