As we draw near to the release of my book, When Freedom Came, I’d like to share a little about Sky Vega, the illustrator.
We met indirectly through a colleague of mine who knew I was in need of an illustrator and kindly put a request on her FB page. I had written a book on South Africa and she had spent her childhood in South Africa. That was a divine connection! I loved her approach to the project, and right from the start, Sky felt we needed to meet weekly on the progress of the illustrations. So every Monday, as best as we could, we skyped for about an hour. I was amazed during our first meeting how similar our individual visions for the illustrations turned out to be. Every week we met, Sky would hold up her sketches to the webcam for me to see. This made the story come very much alive for me.
Sky has been a joy to work with through the entire project. Sky was very accommodating with my requests and never made me feel bad for changing my mind when I decided on a different illustration for the cover than what we had originally decided.
So, if you’ve written a novel or children’s book and looking for an illustrator, check out Sky’s Website. She recently won the “Viewer’s Choice Award” for the BRIC’s OPEN (C)ALL exhibition. To find out more about her entry and about Sky, click here: Studio Visit with Sky Vega.
