Many of you may be familiar with the white elephant gift exchange during the Christmas holidays.  Although I had done gift exchanges at work and with a few women’s groups at Church, I had never heard it termed “white elephant gift” until a couple of years ago.

How do we do the white elephant gift exchange?
1.  Everyone brings a funny, quirky or unusual gift and places it under the Christmas tree.
2.  The leader or the host writes on a piece of paper, the numbers from 1 to  X, depending on the number of people at the party and places it in a hat.
3.  When we are ready to start, the guests, one by one, reach into the hat and grab a number.
4.  The leader/host starts calling out the numbers from number 1.
5.  The first person reaches under the tree for a gift and opens it so we all get to see their gift.
6.  Step 5 is continued as each number is called.  However, if the person who is about to select a present from under the tree likes a gift that someone else already has, they can take that gift away from that person.  The person whose gift was just snatched fishes under the tree for another gift.
7.  One of these gifts under the tree is simply a card with the words “white elephant” or could be an elephant toy or figurine wrapped as a gift.
8.  At the end of the gift opening, there is always one gift left under the tree. The holder of the “white elephant” card or toy gets to select either the last gift under the tree or can take away someone’s gift if they truly want to.   If they do snatch someone else’s gift, that person gets to open the last gift under the tree.

Favorite elephant gift received to date:  A turkey-roast pan snatched from someone.
Worst elephant gift received:  1) bitter foreign chocolate (Yuck!) and 2) a dinner plate proportioned for dieters. Like really?  LOL!
White elephant gifts I’ve given:  1) pack of 24 rolls of toilet paper, 2) Duck Dynasty pillows, 3) Angry Bird pillows and 4) set of 12 canning jars.

Well, it’s countdown to Christmas Day, hope you are excited and thrilled as I am.  Don’t forget in all the hustle and bustle and commercialism, that Jesus is the reason for celebrating.

As always,
Be blessed,
